SHOCK WAVE THERAPY
What Is Shock Wave Therapy?
Shock wave therapy is an in-office procedure that delivers high frequency, low-intensity acoustic waves to treat a variety of chronic conditions. Shock wave treatment aims to heal tissues, encourage cellular growth, relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and restore mobility throughout the musculoskeletal system.
Initially utilized in orthopedic and sports medicine, ESWT has been used to treat a variety of conditions, including:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Jumper’s knee
- Tennis elbow
- Shoulder, hip, or heel pain
- Chronic Inflammation
ESWT is also used to address other issues related to the penis, including Peyronie’s disease—a condition which causes curved, painful erections—and in men looking for natural enhancement.
How Does Shock Wave Therapy for ED Work?
Dr. Naeem will perform a physical examination prior to erectile dysfunction shock wave therapy to help identify the underlying cause of your poor erection and to ensure you are a good candidate for treatment.
During your shockwave treatment session, Dr. Naeem will guide the shock wave device, coated with a special gel, across different targeted areas of the penis. The pulsating acoustic waves delivered from the device cause mild shear stress to penile tissues, triggering a series of biological reactions that release angiogenic factors. This, in turn, repairs blood vessels and promotes the growth of new blood vessels within the genitals, thereby restoring blood flow and erectile abilities.
Shockwave therapy for ED requires no anesthetic or numbing agent. You may experience a small tingling sensation on the penis, but overall discomfort is minimal. The total treatment takes 20 to 30 minutes in the comfort of the Grand Rapids Men’s Clinic.
Typically, shock wave therapy for erectile dysfunction requires roughly 6-12 sessions over a period of several weeks to months, though this can vary depending on your symptoms. In some instances, you may require additional treatments spread out over a longer period.
Benefits of EWST
Unlike other ED treatments, shockwave therapy is a safe, drug-free, non-invasive and non-surgical procedure with little or no known side effects. What’s more, the procedure has little to no downtime; you will be able to resume normal activity the same day of treatment.
The improved erection quality caused by shock wave therapy allows for:
- Harder and more full erections
- Improved sexual performance
- Improved sensitivity
Long-term results of shockwave therapy have been shown to last up to two years. Maintenance treatment sessions can preserve these effects, continuing to improve sexual performance and eliminating the need for ED medications to achieve an erection adequate for sexual activity.
What is Erectile Dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a form of male sexual dysfunction in which a man is unable to achieve or maintain a healthy erection. This is often the result of improper blood flow to the penis, preventing the penis from becoming fully erect. ED can occur due to a number of reasons, including disease, injury, and certain lifestyle habits (such as smoking, drinking, and poor diet).
Whatever the cause of ED may be, an absent or inadequate erection can lead to poor sexual performance, a loss of pleasure, and even emotional distress. Fortunately, an innovative, non-surgical procedure called extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is helping thousands of men restore sexual function by repairing existing blood vessels and promoting the growth of new blood vessels in the male genitals.
